Waterproofing Compound

Waterproofing compounds are to be used with cement while making a waterproof structure. It makes the plaster and concrete dense so that the voids do not form into it and capillaries carrying water are broken. Integral waterproofing compounds for mortar and concrete should be used in such proportions that it does not exceeds 3 percent by weight of cement. Specifications of waterproofing compound should comply with IS 2645:2003. These compounds namely Neoprene, Butyl, EPDM, PVC, HDPE and Polyurethane are available in the form of sheets, tape, liquid compounds etc.

There are two main types of integral waterproofing systems: the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic systems.

A hydrophilic system typically uses a crystallization technology that replaces the water in the concrete with insoluble crystals and the hydrophobic systems uses concrete sealers or even fatty acids to block pores within the concrete, preventing water passage
